Elm Turnings

Elm is such a great looking wood and I enjoy turning it so much I decided it needed it's own page.  The spalting that can occur in this wood sometimes is absolutely amazing.   I don't think I have seen more beautiful spalting as what I have seen in elm.  So lean back in your chair and take a look.  I am sure you will agree that it is a fine looking wood.  Boxes, jars and canisters turned from this wood will remain in that section.  The candy and nut bowls will stay in their respective section as well.

When some folks look at this bowl with its natural color with some spalting thrown in, they will agree it is pretty classy.  And shaped in the form of a pedestal bowl makes it a perfect centerpiece.  Fill it with fruits, nuts or even use it as a serving bowl for salads or veggies.  After all it does hold 5 cups when measured to the brim.  And with the wood being sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with shellac you have a bowl that may be used for any purpose.  Using this combination gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  The bowl is 9” in diameter, 3 ½” high, and has a depth of 2”.  One of a kind so don’t wait too long on this one.  8Oct17  BLE60  $32.50  and $12.00 S&H

The natural color of the wood that this bowl was turned from is really nice looking.  You have a perfect blend of dark and light that only Mamma Nature can provide!  The bowl has a somewhat pedestal form to it and it holds a nice amount of 1 ½ cups measured to the rim.  Of course if you pile up a bunch of nuts or candies in it there will be more than that.  The diameter is 6 ¼” and the height is 2”.  The depth comes to 1 ¼”.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a wax that is walnut oil based.  Totally renewable with olive oil.  Using a combination like this gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  3Oct17  BLE59  $20.00 and $8.00 S&H

Now I don’t have to tell you that this is a lovely looking bowl turned from elm because you can tell that by looking at it.  Right?  The subtle natural colors of this wood make it very popular.  I think elm gives off kind of a warm feeling.  Some it might even make them feel warm and fuzzy.  There are some pin hole sized bug holes in this wood that have no effect on the usage of this bowl.  It held a ½ gallon of water just fine for measuring the volume.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a walnut oil/shellac combination heavy on the shellac.  Using a mixture such as this gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  The bowl measures 10 ½” in diameter, 2 ¾” high and has a depth of 2”.  You will find some lines burned into the bottom for decorative purposes.  28Aug17  BLE57  $35.00 and $12.00 S&H

You just gotta love an elm bowl turned in a pedestal style.  With some natural flaws in the wood left in place this bowl has a great rustic appeal.  Between a slight roughness on the lip to some burring in the wood you just can’t pass this bowl up.  The volume measured at 6 cups of water which it held just fine.  The diameter is 8 ½” with a height of 3 ¾” and a depth of 1 ¾”.  There are a couple of tiny worm holes in the bottom which I filled with clear glue and natural dust.  This would look very good sitting as a centerpiece on your table full of tasty goodies.  Of course you might just decide to fill it with smashed spuds or some other goodie as well.  Use it with confidence as the wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a walnut oil based wax for a low sheen appearance.  This combination gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  4Aug17  BLE55  $32.50 and $12.00 S&H

What we have here is a lovely looking medium sized bowl turned from elm.  Lightweight and easy to care for, this bowl is a winner for leafy salads and other nice goodies.  You can also use it as a centerpiece bowl full of fruits and nuts.  I suppose you might also come up with bunches of other uses for this great looking bowl so I will stop here on that.  The wood was first sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a mixture of walnut oil and shellac, very heavy on the shellac so it will have a bit more sheen.  The diameter is 11 ¼” with a side height of 1 ¾” and a bowl depth of 1”.  The volume measured out to be 4 cups filled to the base of the rim.  I’m not gonna tell you that it’s one of a kind because you already know that.  Right?  7Mar17  BLE52  $35.00 and $14.00 S&H

While writing the descriptions of various pieces I have turned I say this a lot and will do so again.  Not all bowls have to be gargantuan in size.  More folks have needs for smaller bowls than large ones.  Actually, I fit in that category as well.  I do not personally need a huge bowl.  Some folks do and that’s why I try and keep some in the inventory.  This nice smallish bowl turned from elm will hold up to 3 cups of liquid up to the brim.  It certainly has great coloring to it and is without a doubt an eye catcher.  The diameter is 9” with the height being 2” and a depth of 1 ¼”.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a mixture of walnut oil and shellac, heavy on the shellac.  This combo gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish. One of a kind and has a subtle rustic appeal to it.  12Feb17  BLE51 $28.50 and $12.00 S&H

Fairly Large Elm Salad Bowl

When you consider the spalting and natural colors of this elm bowl you might not want to put anything in it.  But come on!  Go ahead and load it up with salads, or use it as a family sized popcorn bowl.  It can handle the job as it is 14” in diameter, 4” high and has a depth of 3”.  That gives the bowl a nice volume measuring at 1 gallon.  The wood was first sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a mixture of walnut oil/shellac.  This combo gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  You will find a little thin crack in the interior but it does not leak so I left it along.  Sometimes better not to fix what’s not broken.  9Dec16  BLE47  $48.50 and $18.00 S&H
