Segmented/Fancy Turnings

You might be wondering what I am meaning when the word segmented is used here.  OK.  It's where a turner cuts up, glues together two or more different kinds of wood to create a bowl, jar or whatever.  So, no telling what all might show up here.  I also included the word fancy just as an attention grabber.   Now I'm gonna wonder if it worked.  Hope you like what you see here.

For those who want to know, this is the first segmented jar I have ever turned.  I think it came out nicely and hope you all agree.  Admittedly, this is from bought wood from a grab bag type purchase and have no idea what all type of wood there is.  I do think some of it is walnut, but I ain’t gonna swear to it.  It does take a bit of time to do on of these with all the gluing that it takes.  The outside diameter is 4 ¾” and the inside is 3 ¼”.  The total height is 6 ¾” with a vessel height of 5 ¼”.  The vessel depth is 4 ½” and the volume is 2 cups.  After the glue was cured, the wood was all sealed with food grade walnut oil.  Then it was buffed to a nice sheen.  Then the finishing was done with shellac, several coats rubbed in and buffed.  Using these materials and methods gives the jar a nice long lasting natural finish.  18Aug20 BXSG1  $55.00  Qualifies for free shipping in the United States.

Here is a really gorgeous jar turned from multiple woods, known as a segmented jar.  The woods were not identified in the grab bag that they came in but I am guessing some of it is soft maple, walnut, and maybe some hard maple.  Just guessing here.  No matter what the woods are, the jar is something to behold.  All of the wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then it was buffed with a special wax.  After all was sanded again, the wood was finished with shellac and then buffed again.  Using this method and materials gives the jar a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  The outside diameter is 5 ½” with the inside diameter being 2 ½”.  The total height is 5” and the vessel height is 3 ½”.  The vessel depth is 3” and the volume is 2 cups.  22Aug20  BXSG2  $55.00 Qualifies for free shipping in the United States.

Sumptuous may not be the best word for describing this goodie box, but it certainly comes close.  I guess it might depend on whether you use it for salts or spices, other herbs, teas, or even your personal stash of pistachios or M&M’s.  It most definitely is decorative as it is turned from 4 different woods.  The center wood is zebrawood which comes from Africa.  Moving outward you then have red oak, maple and poplar.  Using these woods give a nice contrast and make this box beautiful.  The outside diameter is 4” and the inside is 2 ½”.  The total height is 4 ¼” and the vessel height is 3 ¼”.  The vessel depth is 2 ½” and the volume is 1 cup.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil.  After is soaked in overnight the wood was buffed with a wood buffing compound called tripoli.  While spinning at about 1000 rpm’s the wood was then finished with shellac.  Using these methods and materials gives the box a nice hard natural long lasting finish.  13Sep20  BXSG3  $45.00  Qualifies for free shipping in the United States.
