Wood Finishing and Techniques

Caring for your Wood

And other Tidbits

There are some general things that a person should know about caring for a wood product such as a handmade bowl or serving dish.  This also applies to boxes and other pieces as well.   All the finishes I use, including shellac are natural finishes.  I never use the term “food safe” because I have no idea what you may or may not be allergic to.  But I will say that customers and family alike serve foods in my products with no problems.  The walnut oil I use is considered food grade and of course the carnauba wax is a natural compound as well.  The wood is harvested by myself with the help of a couple of friends and I cut the logs down and dry the wood in my own kiln.  So, from start to finish there could be a time lapse of 2-3 months before a piece is ready for market.  Below are some very basic caring tips.

  1. Do not put your wood items in a dishwasher.
  2. Do not put your wood items in a microwave.
  3. Do not use any of the wood dusting products that you might see advertised on TV.  They are poison to your bowls and such.
  4. Clean your wood items with a soft cloth or sponge using warm soapy water.  Either dry them by hand or air dry them.
  5. If the wood feels real dry to you, you may renew the finish with olive oil.  This works with any of them that had a finish of walnut oil and carnauba wax.
  6. If the piece has a shellac finish, it should not need anything done to it for many, many years.

Thank you again for your purchase and please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.
